Ostrava Day 5

The first round at the European Championship ended on Tuesday with the last preliminary phase games. From Ostrava the Netherlands, Spain and Czech Republic already were qualified for the final round in Brno (September 18-21). Russia is going to play for seventh place in Blansko (September 18), while Croatia and Greece try to avoid relegation to the B-Pool in Trebic (September 18 & 19).
The fifth day of the first round started with a huge surprise. Greece, which had previously lost all four games, upset Croatia with a 10-0 shutout in seven innings. Panagiotis Sikaras issued just seven hits in seven scoreless innings. He struck out 13. Chris Christopoulos, hit a home run, scored four times and drove in two. Max Gouron also had two RBI. Ostrava Day 4

In Ostrava offense continued to dominate the headlines. In the morning Croatia got its first win with a 10-3 victory over Russia. Ivan Racic and Andrija Tomic connected for home runs in the fourth to highlight a six-run rally. They combined for seven RBI overall. Jimmy Summers meanwhile threw a complete game, allowing three unearned runs on six hits and four walks. Denis Leonov got charged with the loss. 

In the afternoon the Czech Republic clubbed Greece 17-2 in six innings. Six runs in the second and five in the fifth blew the score wide open. Matej Hejma, Petr Cech and Jakub Sladek hit home runs and drove in three runs apiece. Martin Schneider went 4-for-4, playing shortstop. Petr Minarik gave up two runs on six hits in six innings to pick up the win.

Sunday games in Ostrava had clear winners. 

Spain - Russia 12:0

Spanish team had third morning game and as in past days, they again won. Russian hope to play tight game was cooled down in the 1st inning, in which Spain scored twice also thanks to homerun by Fernando Martinez (2 RBI). Russian hitters had problems with Spain pitcher Eric Gonzales and had only five hits. Despite that they did not manage to score. Spanish team scored during the whole game and won after 7th inning. Umpires of this game: Silvano Filippi (ITA), David Kulhanek (CZE), Frantisek Pribyl (CZE). 

Netherlands - Greece 11:0

Starting pitcher of Greek team was Angelos Argyropoulose who did not allow Dutch hittets
