Day two at the U18 European Championship in Ostrava, Czech Republic featured four more first-round games. The Netherlands entered the tournament with a convincing win over Sweden, which dropped to 0-2. France and Russia rebounded from opening day losses to reach the win column. Germany won a thriller in the evening over Spain to improve to 2-0. 

Netherlands – Sweden 12-2 (8)

The Netherlands hit four home runs in a 12-2 ten-run rule shortened win over Sweden in their first game of the tournament. Julian Rip led all batters by going 4-for-5 with two long balls, a double, four runs scored and four RBI. Ruben Prins also collected four hits. Menno Lenting and Chiel Berkhout went deep as well. Gijs Timmer earned the win, allowing four hits, two runs and a walk in five innings. Oskar Syren conceded seven runs (6 ER) on ten hits in five frames to take the loss.

France – Great Britain 9-2

France defeated Great Britain 9-2 to earn their first win of the Junior Euros, while the British squad dropped to 0-2. Three runs in the first two innings and three in the fourth decided the outcome early. Luke Duris went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Mohamed Baoui doubled twice, scored three times and drove in two. Antoine Villard struck out seven in five innings, giving up five hits, two runs (1 ER) and three walks for the win. Luke Plummer got charged with eight hits, six runs (4 ER) and three base on balls in four innings taking the loss.

Russia – Croatia 8-4

Russia overcame an early 1-4 deficit en route to an 8-4 victory over Croatia. Both teams are 1-1 in Group B. After cutting the deficit to a run, the Russian squad put five runs on the board in the seventh to turn the game around. Sergey Kudryashov and Danil Moshechkov highlighted the rally with two-run hits. Antonio Bulte had three hits and two RBI. Antonio Horvatic scored twice for Croatia. Evgeny Libin struck out nine in four scoreless one-hit relief innings for the win. Karlo Dumic got charged with the loss.

Spain – Germany 6-10 (10)

In the evening game on Tuesday Germany looked like the sure winner, when they led 5-2 entering the ninth. But reliever Sean Cowan walked the first two batters and gave up a three-run home run to Eloi Puigferrer to send the game into extra innings. There the momentum shifted once again, as Germany scored five runs in the tenth on route to a 10-6 win. Vincent Helget homered for the German squad. Samuel Steigert had three more RBI to raise his total to eight after two games. Orlando Decana hit a solo home run for Spain. Germany’s starting pitcher Sascha Koch struck out 11 in seven innings, allowing seven hits, two runs (1 ER) and two walks. Yannic Wildenhain picked up the win, bailing out Cowan in the ninth and the tenth. Eric Izquiero gave up five hits, four runs (3 ER) and four walks in 5 2/3 innings for Spain. Decena took the loss.  

Outlook

On Wednesday Germany has a quick turnaround, being back on the field at 11am to face France. In the afternoon Italy squares up against Spain at 3pm and Sweden hopes for its first win against Russia at 5pm. In the evening the Czech Republic and the Netherlands battle at 7pm.
